Thousands of holidaymakers breathed a sigh of relief when a proposed 24-hour strike by Greek air traffic controllers was called off.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) said more than 18,000 tourists could have suffered long airport delays as all airports throughout Greece would have been affected.

However, the strike was called off.

An ABTA spokesman said: "These sorts of strikes are usually over pay and conditions, but nine times out of ten they don't actually go-ahead.

"The thing is these strikes normally take place during the summer holidays when airports are at their busiest, which is a very effective bargaining tool."
