They were low on numbers and well beaten, but Southend Sabres had one great moment to remember this derby by.

Although they conceded four touchdowns, their own TD at the start of the second half was one that will live long in the memory of Dave Gowers.

Little speedster Gowers set a club record, returning the kick-off to run in from 97 yards.

But there was little else to cheer for Sabres chief Gary Abbott, who had to make do with a handful of players.

He said: "I hate making excuses, but it was a really muggy afternoon and we had 14 players out there, giving their all for three hours and they were absolutely shattered at the end.

"Spartans turn up fully kitted out and sponsored with 38 players -- it's a bit different!

"We fell by the wayside, but I can't fault the players who were there for us though, they gave everything."

Spartans coach Dean Gibson, meanwhile, was delighted with his side's performance.

He said: "It all came together well and the defense did not give them an inch."

Spartans scored two TDs in the air, with both Dean Moore and John Stott taking from 20 yards, while Gary Dillon ran in their other two TDs.
