Successful protest - residents lobbied councillors yesterday before they refused plans for adding floodlights to a hockey pitch at St Thomas More High School Picture: STEVE O'CONNELL

More than 20 opponents of the scheme attended a meeting of Southend Council's development control committee to hear the decision on the scheme, at St Thomas More High School for Boys in Kenilworth Gardens, Westcliff.

A massive sigh of relief rippled around the room when proposals to put up six 13 metre-high floodlights and extend the hours that the pitch could be used were rejected.
