A special 'blitz on litter' was held in Ingatestone on Saturday to launch a new campaign to clean up the village.
Around 45 volunteers wearing bright lemon vests spent about three hours removing litter from the parish, using litter pickers and black sacks provided by Brentwood Borough Council. They removed an estimated 700 pounds of litter and other rubbish.
Afterwards they enjoyed refreshments funded by the parish council and community association, and served by members of the Women's Institute.
On the previous day, around 20 students from the Anglo European School had cleaned up areas close to the school, in Willow Green, and the centre of Ingatestone.
The initiative was held by the new Ingatestone Litter Action Group, which aims to reduce litter in the area and raise awareness of the benefits of disposing of litter properly.
Chairman Brian Tytherleigh said: "This has been an excellent start, not only because of the impact made on the appearance of Ingatestone, but also because of the high profile the project had - florescent lemon vests are very noticeable.
"Hopefully we have helped to make all residents, regardless of age, more aware of the need to dispose of their litter in an appropriate manner. We are most grateful to our volunteers."
The action group is made up of residents, representatives of the borough and parish councils, and a teacher and student from the Anglo European School.
