The clean-up of an oil spill at a picturesque village pond has hit taxpayers in the wallet for more than £15,000.

Environment Agency officers are renewing their plea for anyone who witnessed how the spill at Panners Farm hamlet, Great Notley, took place to contact them.

The agency was alerted to the spill by a resident who saw a dead fish in the pond on Saturday, June 7, but they have not been able to find out exactly when the spill occurred.

John Parish, Environment Agency officer, said they still believe the spill came from a domestic heating system on the White Court estate.

He warned someone could have a leak in their system and another spill could happen if they do not detect it in time.

He said if people know anything and want to call him in confidence, they can ring 01473 706366 or the national line on 0800 807060.

The officer praised Countryside Properties, which owns the land, for its speedy response in getting contractors Tamdown involved in cleaning up the spill.
