Supermarket chain Tesco has denied there is a problem with trolleys being taken from its Braintree town centre store.
Shopper Keith Shoat claimed there was a lack of trolleys at the Market Place store and he had to wait to get one when he visited the shop on Saturday
Pensioner Mr Shoat, 69, of Keeble Way, Braintree, said he waited seven minutes and had been told by a trolley handler there used to be 150 trolleys but there were now just over 40.
He said people took trolleys away with them and did not bring them back.
A Tesco spokesman said: "There is no problem with the trolleys.
"The situation is the volume of trolleys and baskets are the same as they have always been."
The store is looking to increase the trolley fleet next month.
He said there were not enough trolley collectors at the time and apologised to people who had to wait
