About 100 people attended a meeting to protest at plans to develop Bathside Bay in Harwich.
Residents Against Port Expansion (Rape), an umbrella group which is against the planned container terminal, met at The Royal in Main Road, Dovercourt.
Guest speakers included an environmental lawyer who spoke about the European Directives on birds and habitat, a spokesman from the Society for Preservation of Ancient Buildings, environmentalists and speakers about health and safety, accident records and the risks of loading and storing of flammable and combustible cargoes close to properties.
"The campaign is moving forward and gaining ever wider support," said John Tipple, a founder member of Rape and one of the speakers.
The residents' meeting also discussed the forthcoming referendum in advance of the parish meeting taking place today
