Traders fear another shutdown of their Billericay village could prove disastrous to their businesses.

The warning was made as plans to restart disruptive drainage works in Ramsden Bellhouse start to move forward despite Essex County Council becoming the focus of attention by the Ombudsman for maladministration surrounding the project.

In September the £500,000 works began, after it was named one of the worst areas for road surface water in the county by Essex County Council.

The road block cut off Church Road and sent motorists on an eight mile diversionary route through Downham Road, Castledon Road and London Road.

In February the work was halted as the costs were escalating and now Essex County Council is looking to the most efficient way to finish the job.

A spokesman for Essex County Council added that they would try to ensure there was as little disruption as possible for residents and traders.

Publican of the Fox and Hounds pub in Church Road, Jill Young has expressed great concern about the potential return of the road block after her taking dropped 43 per cent between September and February.

She said: "Another road closure would crucify my business.

"I just about survived when Church Road was closed last time. The diversion takes people about eight miles out of their way and they pass several different pubs on their way round. "

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: "The work was stopped because of escalating costs and we are looking for the most efficient way to finish the job with the least amount of disruption.

"There is an investigation by the Ombudsman and we will happily provide them with any information they ask for."

The Ramsden Bellhouse Parish Council has pledged to keep villagers informed and is hoping to hold a public meeting when a date is set for the work to resume.
