The controversial entrance to Southend Pier is now fully open to the public.

Confusion reigned last month when the new steel and glass structure was officially opened and then closed a few days later.

But now the finishing touches have been added to the entrance which pier and foreshore officer Marjory Hall claims has got the "wow" factor.

Mrs Hall said visitors to the town had given the new structure the thumbs up.

She said: "The entrance is now open every day.

"It looks great and has been worth the wait. Visitors have told staff they love the building - they feel it has really got the 'wow' factor."

The new structure attracted criticism because it is in stark contrast to the landmark Victorian pier.

It was opened during the airshow weekend but closed days later to allow essential glazing work to be carried out.

The structure is part of a £1 million scheme funded by EU cash and the Government via the Local Transport Plan.
