A man who was moving house put five bags outside his home - and a recycling firm drove off with the lot.
The man was shocked to come out of his house to discover the bags, containing personal items worth about £1,000, had vanished.
Police are investigating whether the bags were stolen deliberately but believe they were innocently taken by mistake by the recycling firm.
Police said the five bin bags had been left in the man's front garden of the house in Willow Way, Dovercourt.
Inside were 25 jumpers, jeans, overcoats and jackets, worth about £1,000.
There was also a soldier's ceremonial busby cap.
Police are investigating whether the bags were stolen by an opportunist thief or whether the recycling firm made a mistake. The incident happened between 1pm and 2pm yesterday
