A market day clampdown on traffic in Bank Street and Swan Side in Braintree Town Centre is being sought after a woman was injured by a runaway car.
The move for restrictions comes after traders at the town centre strategy group expressed concerns over parking and traffic on Wednesdays and Saturdays when market stalls are out in the centre.
One store manager Debbie Davis said: "It was very upsetting for everyone. Is there nothing that can be done to stop vehicles going through there?"
Previous attempts to restrict traffic on market days have been fruitless but Braintree Council Head of Planning Peter Crofts said he thought the accident would "influence a few minds."
A 61-year-old was trapped under a driverless Ford Galaxy that ran backwards down Bank Street two weeks ago. Six men lifted the vehicle from her.
The group decided to press for action and a district council spokesman confirmed: "We are contacting Essex County Council to review the traffic management issues in that area, with particular reference to market days."
The injured woman is still seriously ill in Colchester General Hospital.
