A stolen car smashed into a play area's fences, throwing its future into doubt.

The car rammed the railings at the Ramsey War Memorial's play area four times before driving off.

It is the latest in a long line of vandalism at the site in Wix Road.

Mary Anne Bishop, secretary of the war memorial hall's management committee, said: "I was devastated. It's just so sickening. It's mindless vandalism.

"I just can't believe it. The damage was caused by a stolen vehicle which was taken from Great Oakley.

"It's just broken down all the railings around the play area so that it can't be used."

The play area is currently off limits and cordoned off with police tape. Police know the car was stolen as its bumper and registration plate fell off during the incident.

Mrs Bishop said previously picnic tables had been chopped up, swings were flung over the top of their supports and someone had attacked equipment with a pair of pliers.

Mrs Bishop said the war memorial committee had to pay for a safety inspection each year, which listed what repairs needed to be done. There is currently a bill for £1,000.

The committee had asked Ramsey and Parkeston Parish Council to take over responsibility for the area.

Roy Wilkinson, parish councillor and committee member, said today: "I think we shall have to close it."
