Four people were today recovering in hospital after they were involved in a collision just outside Wickford.

Police believe the accident occurred when a burgundy Ford Fiesta, overtook a lorry while travelling on Nevendon Road towards Wickford and collided with a burgundy Ford Sierra going in the opposite direction.

Paramedics and fire crews were called to the scene and a male passenger, who was in the Fiesta, had to be cut out of the car by firefighters.

He was suffering from internal injuries while the 19-year-old Fiesta driver had minor wounds.

They were taken to Basildon Hospital. A female passenger, who had been travelling in the Sierra with the 29-year-old driver, suffered from facial injuries while the driver also sustained minor cuts. Both needed hospital treatment.

Police believe there was a lorry in the area at the time of the crash and are anxious to speak to the driver.

Contact police on 01268 541312. They are also trying to trace the driver of a small silver car which may have been involved in the incident.

The driver of the Fiesta was arrested and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries .
