The National Blood Service has launched an award scheme to thank and reward blood donors, supporters and members of staff who help to save and improve the lives of thousands and sick and injured people each year.

The NBS is looking for nominations for people, groups and organizations who have supported the service and deserve a big thank you.

Communications officer Ruth Greenaway said: "People have done incredible things to help the NBS. For example there is the collection team who, faced with adverse weather and a frozen lorry lift, transported all the equipment by hand to ensure a blood donor session continued. By nominating a person, group or organization who has done something special, we can thank and recognize them for what they have done."

Nominations must be for a special act or event that happened between September 2002 and the closing date of September 30, 2003.

They should be submitted on a special form, available by calling the NBS National Donor Helpline on 0845 7711 711.

Nominations for a special award will be judged and successful nominees will be invited to a regional special awards event. Regional award winners will go forward for selection for the national special awards due to be presented in spring 2004.
