People living in Stanway claim they have been given an assurance that no travellers' sites will be placed near where they live.
But the revelation caught Colchester's borough councillors by surprise as they said they had heard nothing about any such guarantees being given to any parts of the town.

Terry Sutton, (Lib Dem Berechurch), environment portfolio holder on the council, said nothing had been decided for or against any sites and wondered how such an assurance had been made.
Stanway Parish Council said it has been told by Essex county councillor for the area, Chris Manning-Press, that it will not be getting any permanent sites.
The claim was made in a report to a meeting of Colchester Council's travellers' sub-group last night.
But other borough councillors at the meeting said if Stanway's claim was correct, then they wanted similar guarantees to be made for the wards they represented.
Colchester Council's eight cabinet members, including Mr Sutton, are due to select one or more locations in the next two months.
