Southend Athletic Club made a quick exit from the British Jubilee Cup -- mainly due to the fact that their women's team for the day consisted of just one athlete.
The Cup differs from the League structure in that it is a reducing competition -- with knock-out rounds rather than points compiled over a series of matches.
In this round Southend produced an excellent series of performances from the men, but the absence of all but one member of the women's team left the team trailing -- although by the smallest of margins -- and out of the count.
The field eventers as usual turned up trumps with wins all-round from the vertical jumpers -- Greg Goodrem with his 1.85m high jump and Jamie Webb in the pole vault (3.00m).
James South and Dave Condon cleaned up in all four throws.
James threw the discus 45.40m and the hammer 41.21m while Dave launched the shot to 15.48m and the javelin to 45.03m.
Over on the track Colin Miles brought in the seventh win of the day when he showed the opposition a clean pair of heels in the 1500m (4m02.2).
Some other serious point scoring was achieved by Adam Shaw in the 400m with his second place performance of 50.7 confirming the standard which this 16 year old has achieved already this season.
Graham Eastty blazed around the 400m hurdles in 58.2 and Jonathan Brown clocked an impressive 22.4 in the 200m.
It was good to see Paul Barry back in the frame. He produced a second place long jump with 6.30m. The sprint relay squad of Jonathan Brown, Graham Eastty, Paul Knight and Charlie Knight clocked 44.4 for runners-up spot.
The women's team was a solo effort by Trudy McQuibban.
In the end she placed second in the triple jump (10.35m) and third in the high jump (1.50).
