Organisers of a campaign to clean up Walton in a week have hit out at someone who dumped more than 50 fridges in their skip.

The rubbish amnesty, paid for by Tendring Council, started on Monday with huge skips placed in the Station Street car park for people to get rid of unwanted items before the holiday season gets into full swing.

The big chill - more than 50 fridges were left in one day at a clean-up in Walton

But organisers at the Walton Community Project, set up to rejuvenate the town, found more than 50 fridges appeared on the second day, filling a giant skip and part of the car park.

Walton farmer David Eagle, who sponsored the clean-up, said: "Someone has taken a huge liberty."

John Halls, Walton Forum member and town councillor, said they faced a dilemma due to the strict regulations involving the disposal of fridges.

He said: "We said we would take fridges but we never said we would take 54 of them."

Mr Halls said on the poster it said they would take domestic rubbish and white goods but believed they may have come from a commercial company. Other fridges were later added to the collection, making 68.

Special arrangements were put in place by Essex County Council to collect all the fridges yesterday and take them to Pitsea.
