A brave dad narrowly escaped injury today in a heroic stand-off with a joyrider who stole his son's car.

Police said the man was standing outside his home in Tabora Avenue, Canvey, when he saw a teenager get into his son's K-registration Ford Fiesta and drive off.

He ran into the middle of the road and stood in front of the car and tried to stop the youth taking the vehicle.

But the youngster, said to be aged 17 or 18, continued driving straight towards him.

The father only just managed to jump out of the way in time during the incident which happened at about 2.18am this morning.

His son called Rayleigh police and officers searching the area managed to find the car around half an hour later on Prince William Avenue.
