A man whose body was found in a farm pond came from the Tendring district.
Police identified the man yesterday but will not release his name until relatives have been traced.
An Essex Police spokeswoman said officers were not prepared to say in which town the man lived at this stage, only that he was local.
"All we can say at this time is that he lived in the Tendring district and was in his 40s," she added.
The gruesome discovery of the body was made by farmer James Fairley junior on his land at Wolves Hall Farm in Tendring village on Wednesday.
It was found in a pond in a secluded wooded area. The scene was immediately sealed off by police.
A post-mortem examination yesterday failed to reveal the exact cause of death. Further tests will now need to be carried out and that could take several weeks.
