Youngsers are reaping the benefits of a new initiative aimed at tailoring their education to their interests and plans for future employment
A number of pupils at Clacton County High School are combining a mix of traditional schooling with work placements.
They are following an alternative education programme, which is being sponsored by the Education Action Zone.
It has involved placements with transport firms, hairdressing salons, in childcare and many other fields.
John Clay, principal at the school, said many of the youngsters had enjoyed outstanding successes.
Dean Lowe joined the team at Hamblion Transport in Colchester and after two years, has completed an NVQ Level 1 in performing engineering operations and is working on units for level 2.
He is now staying on as a fully-fledged employee to do a modern apprenticeship.
"Being here has made me grow up and I've learned to get along with adults. It helps that I enjoy what I do," he said.
Kym Stone joined up with the Future Training Agency being interested in childcare, achieved qualifications and was awarded employee of the month
