Year six students at Bournes Green Junior School, in Ladram Road, took at trip to Thorpe Bay beach as part of their survey and they studied the foreshore, boats and people.
Then they made a model which they entered in the South East Essex Art and Design competition, where it went on to win gold.
Headteacher Chris Holliday said: "The children thoroughly enjoyed the trip, and as well as the model winning gold in the competition, the school came first overall."
