Colchester Golf Club's Alan Macnaught has been selected in a six-man squad to represent the United Kingdom at the European Seniors Team Championship.

Macnaught, who plays off a handicap of three, has done enough in UK Senior Golf Association competitions across the country to justify inclusion for the event to be played from July 9-11 at Bled, Slovenia.

The competition has attracted entries from over 20 countries and players will be doing battle in scratch stroke-play over three rounds of 18 holes with the best four from six scores counting towards a country's total score.

And the result that may have tipped the balance was a tenth spot in the European Golf Association Individual Championships held at Chantaco Golf Club, near Biarritz, recently.

Macnaught said: "Seniors golf is very close to my heart.

"Seniors amateur scratch golf begins at 55, unlike the professional seniors that starts at 50.

"It provides me with a competitive arena. Competing with the best Europeans is a challenge and a priviledge."

Macnaught moved down to the area from Scotland 24 years ago to work for Philips Electronics.

Now retired, most of his time is spent treading the fairways and trying to fine-tune his swing.

Macnaught has made his mark on the Colchester Golf Club honours boards with no less than five inclusions on the club champions' board.
