A thief who stole a hi-tech toy from Southend Hospital children's ward has been branded the "lowest of the low".

The £200 PlayStation2, donated by a grateful family, was taken from the Neptune children's ward on Monday.

It has left sick children toying with the older PlayStation games system.

Staff put up a notice explaining why the more up-to-date model is not available.

Ros Mortis, head of communications at the hospital, said: "This is one of the most mean and despicable things to do - to steal equipment from a children's hospital ward.

"Our nurses are very busy on the ward and not there to be watching the toys all day.

"Someone has unplugged it and taken it away from the play area.

"It was very popular with the children. Some are in here for a long time and it is terribly important that we make it a nice environment with plenty for them to do."

If anyone has received a PlayStation2 as an unwanted gift, Ms Mortis promised it would get a good home at the hospital. Anyone who can help should ring her on 01702 221045.
