Owner of bar and restaurant Tigerlily in Leigh Road, Danny Liu said he has been left thousands of pounds out of pocket.

He said: "I have been seriously affected by the roadworks. My takings are down by 30 per cent. That is a staggering amount.

"It is worse during the day for customers. It is very loud with all the workmen and people can't park."

Road users and residents say they are fed up with the constant gridlock and traffic mayhem.

Portfolio holder for transport, Brian Kelly, said a collapsed sewer under Kings Road had made emergency works necessary. A gas main problem in Victoria Avenue had also caused problems.

He said: "I am very sorry if the traders are losing business, but there are alternative routes into Leigh, and we will get the roads open again as soon as we possibly can."
