The mother of a detective injured when trying to arrest a man has told of her relief that her daughter is still alive.
Det Con Kerry Tolliday, 34, was knocked unconscious in the incident in Farringdon car park, off Southend High Street, on Monday afternoon.
Her mum, Judy Allen, from Worcestershire, visited her daughter in Southend Hospital and said from her bedside: "I am very proud of her.
"I am just so relieved that my daughter is all right. It all shows you how fragile life really is - and the dangers faced by front-line police officers."
Det Con Tolliday remains in bed because of lingering concussion, and will not be able to leave hospital until Friday.
The mother-of-two suffered a head wound which was treated with 16 staples. She also has grazes on her arms and back.
She said: "I have been in the police for 17 years and I had never experienced anything of this nature ever before. I am just grateful because, apparently, there was an awful lot of help at the scene."
