Residents fear someone will be killed if speed and parking restrictions are not introduced in their street.

People living in Sunnyside, Braintree, are about to launch a petition to get Essex County Council's highways department to stop motorists using the road to cut through traffic.

Campaigners want speed humps, parking permit schemes and the road restricted to one-way access to ease problems in the street.

Bill Wilson, who has lived in Sunnyside for five years, is spearheading the campaign. He said: "I sat in my room last Sunday week and I saw 25 to 30 cars go through doing in excess of 20 miles per hour which is very dangerous.

"There's going to be a fatal down there."

Mr Wilson said parked vehicles were damaged by cars going through the narrow road, and often residents could not park outside their homes because the space has been taken by motorists who do not live in the area.

An Essex County Council spokesman said: "We are aware of this situation and we will be carrying out a study later on in the financial year."
