Pizza Express is not the only high-profile chain trying to get into Maldon, it has been revealed.
Murray Foster, town centre manager, told the Evening Gazette he had received a string of inquiries from "large names" keen to establish themselves in the town.
The firms have made their approaches via agents and typically only identify themselves as national "food" or "non-food" retailers.
As yet, none have made a formal approach for planning permission and some have been put off by the lack of large retail sites available.
But Mr Foster said the high level of interest, together with a series of recent independent shop openings, bodes well for the future.
"I'm still getting inquiries from people who want to bring their business to the town and there are very few premises vacant," he said.
Changes in High Street since the turn of the year include the arrivals of clothing alterations shop Cloakroom and jewellery store Artful Angels, plus the expansion of Platform One Classic, which now runs men's and ladies' boutiques on separate sites.
