Staff and children at Appleton School, in Croft Road, Benfleet, are thrilled they are to get an Artsmark, which recognises the school's commitment to art forms such as drama, art, music and dance.
Guy Naylor, headteacher, said: "I am delighted the Arts Council has recognised this school's progressive, well-balanced art programme which enables students to work with local artists."
Pupils are able to study art, photography, ceramics, dance, music and drama as a GCSE subject and the school works in partnership with local organisations.
Only 700 schools nationally have been chosen for the award.
