Blaze - workmen used an extinguisher to put out flames on scaffolding Picture: LUAN MARSHALL
Builders had been working with a blowtorch when felt and wood on the scaffolding caught alight.
Quick-thinking builders used a nearby fire extinguisher to douse the flames.
One engine from Basildon Fire and Rescue attended, but the small blaze had already been put out.
The store was not evacuated and most shoppers went about filling their carts, oblivious to the drama unfolding outside.
