A major route into Colchester could grind to a halt if a new housing complex gets the go-ahead, it is feared.

Developers want to build more than 30 flats in Ipswich Road, not far from the junction with Severalls Lane.

But the plans have come under fire from residents, who fear extra traffic could lead to rush-hour blues for drivers.

Ward councillor Paul Smith said: "It is a totally unsuitable development in the wrong place the potential for it to greatly increase traffic will cause snarl-ups in Ipswich Road."

Mr Smith claims the flats, next to Acorn Close, will create "major problems" if the project goes ahead.

"It will have a very detrimental effect on traffic that scarcely moves in rush hour. There are already jams up there at the moment," he said.

A special meeting was held this week to look at the plans and protesters are now launching a petition.

The plans will go before school governors at a meeting next week
