Colchester United boss Phil Parkinson refused to be downcast at missing out on Gareth Williams' signature and declared that the former loan star could one day return to Layer Road.
Parkinson admits he was keen to lure Williams back to Essex.
But the 20-year-old Welshman has signed a new three-year deal with his club, Crystal Palace.
Parkinson told the Evening Gazette: "We looked into it, but he was offered a good deal at Palace.
"In any case, as he is under 24 the fee would have gone to tribunal and it could have worked out quite expensive for us.
"We just have to move on and look elsewhere, although there may be the possibility of him returning on loan sometime in the future."
Williams was a big hit with U's fans last season, scoring six goals in an eight-game loan spell through January to March.
He also became the first Colchester player to score a league hat-trick for over ten years when he bagged three goals in the 4-1 win at home to Port Vale.
His future at the Eagles was up in the air following Trevor Francis' departure, but he looks set for a fresh start after signing a new contract under Steve Kember.
Williams said: "I'm delighted that everything has now been sorted out."
