Stuart Thurgood has been given 48-hours to reconsider his Southend United career after rejecting a one-year deal with the Blues for next season.

The midfielder told Shrimpers manager Steve Wignall yesterday that he would not be at Roots Hall when the players return for pre-season on June 26.

But the 21-year-old has been given a 48-hour cooling off period in case he changes his mind.

That leaves just striker Mark Rawle and winger Steven Clark still uncommitted as today's deadline for re-signing looms.

"I wish Stuart all the best," said Wignall. "I made him an offer because I thought he had something there.

"He only had a bit part last season but I saw him as a utility player with a role to play at Southend.

"We have given him 48 hours to think things over and see if any other offers are forthcoming, but I don't think he will sign for us."

Thurgood, who joined Blues in February 2001 from Shimuzu S-Pulse, was unavailable for comment and is understood to have trained with Ryman Premier side Canvey Island last week.

Wignall said the shaven-headed midfielder made his decision for financial reasons as he has a mortgage and a young family.

Former West Ham man Clark, 21, was expected to sign a new one year deal today.

But Wignall has heard nothing from Rawle who is believed to have attracted interest from five league and one non-league clubs.

Wignall has tabled an improved offer for the forward -- who joined Blues from Boston United in February 2001 -- and is hoping for a decision from the 24-year-old before today's deadline passes.
