Major changes to improve the environment of Leigh Old Town are being examined.
At a special meeting of Leigh Town Council due to be held next month the proposals will be discussed by members with top Southend councillors.
Cabinet members David Garston, Anna Waite and Brian Kelly will be looking at problems in the town centre along with the town council to look at how it can be improved.
The town council's old town working party has been looking at alternatives for the area to encourage both tourism and the development of the fishing industry.
It is likely when final changes emerge that there will be restricted access to some parts of the High Street with some car parks being residents-only.
As well as the old town itself, the group will also be looking at Church Hill, the historic part of the town which takes pedestrians down from the Broadway and also contains terraces of old weatherboarded cottages.
