A leading Conservative councillor is calling on the Liberal Democrat administration at Brentwood Borough Council to change the way it prepares agendas for its meetings, so they finish at a reasonable time.

Cllr Frank Kenny, the deputy leader of the Conservative group on the council, said recent meetings had continued until midnight and beyond, and it was "totally unacceptable" for councillors to make important decisions so late at night, when they are tired.

And he said the agendas have been structured so that important debates take place at the end of council meetings.

But council leader Vicky Cook has hit back, saying that it was "extremely rare" for meetings to continue so late.

She added: "I think it is our duty to take our time when making decisions, and if it takes us until late at night then so be it."
