An angry New Year reveller returned to the house in Hatfield Peverel on January 1 with a broken bottle where he had earlier gate crashed an unauthorised party.

Other party goers were awoken by Nathan Collins, 18, demanding the return of his mobile phone.

He terrified the youngsters in the house and one of them needed stitches to a cut on his arm inflicted by Collins, Joanne Eley, prosecuting, told Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday.

Collins, of Berwick Close, Chelmsford, admitted affray and having an offensive weapon at a house in Deverals Close. He was ordered to do 175 hours community punishment and pay £200 prosecution costs and £250 compensation to Glenn Wizik for the cut on his arm.

His not guilty pleas to offences of assault and theft were accepted by the prosecution.

Miss Eley said Collins was not invited to the party held at the Harringtons house in Hatfield Peverel but was made welcome.

He left later after a dispute over mobile telephones and other property. At 5am he returned with another man and banged on the door. He was let in and frightened people in the house with a broken bottle and injured Mr Wizik.

Passing sentence Judge Gareth Hawksworth said: "This was a party without parental consent on a day and a night when people are out enjoying themselves.

"Acting from a sense of grievance you acted in a truly disgusting way and frightened and upset other people. You threatened them with a broken bottle and went upstairs and woke people from their sleep and behaved in a disgraceful way.

"You are not going to prison but this is the last chance you are going to get."
