A blind Colchester pensioner was conned out of hundreds of pounds by a bogus electrician.
The 87-year-old victim was visited by the caller at his warden-controlled accommodation in Ipswich Road while his wife was in the garden.
Police said the caller told him he had to check the bungalow's electrics.
While the visitor pretended to do the work, he asked the elderly man whether he had any money.
The victim, who is registered blind, had £420, which the caller took before walking out of the bungalow.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, said he was not surprised that the bogus caller had targeted a man who was blind.
He said: "It just underlines that they pick on the most vulnerable because they are the perfect victims. It's true to form as to the way they operate."
A witness described the conman as white, clean shaven, about 50 years old, 5ft 10ins tall with cropped, dark brown hair and a medium build.
He was wearing a white polo shirt.
