The 29-year-old, of Viola Drive, South Ockendon, died later in Basildon Hospital despite attempts to save his life.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses, especially three lads on mountain bikes who were in the nearby park, to call them on 01375 391212.
Mr Hatch's mother and other relatives visited the murder scene yesterday to lay flowers.
A family friend, who did not want to be named, said: "Stephen wasn't a saint but he had a heart of gold."
