A dedicated volunteer was lost for words when she was awarded the Valerie Wells trophy for her services to the community.

Joan Spye has worked as a volunteer for Age Concern, Canvey, since it opened eight years ago, helping out in the office, organising holidays and day trips and hosting luncheons.

Delighted with her award, she said: " I've worked in the community nearly all my life and I just love it.

"It's a two-way thing though, I work hard but I get a lot back.

"I was absolutely gob-smacked when I heard I'd won the award because I was just doing something I enjoy immensely."

Joan was awarded her trophy by mayor Chris Freeman at this week's Age Concern luncheon.
