Ronnie Irani is expected back to lead Essex when they go into one-day action against Surrey and Warwickshire over the weekend.
And he may be joined by Nasser Hussain who is available once more after successfully leading England to a 2-0 victory in the Test series against Zimbabwe
Irani has been out for three weeks recovering from a knee problem but he is likely to concentrate on batting rather than bowling should he take his place in the side.
Essex are still some way off finalising their side for tomorrow's Twenty20 Cup battle against Surrey at East Molesey, three batsmen having still to get the all-clear following injuries.

The Zimbabwean was struck in the final over of the innings by a delivery from Mohammad Sami and failed to take the field when Pakistan batted.
Essex will need to be at their very best to overcome a Surrey team, who have only been beaten once in all competitions this summer, as they look to make a winning start in the new competition.
Essex return to Chelmsford for a League match against Warwickshire on Sunday and will be thirsting for revenge against opponents who dumped them out of the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy just over a fortnight ago.
