A motorist was left with a damaged car and in shock after he hit two horses on the A127, killing one and leaving the other so badly injured it had to be put down.
Police were alerted at just before midnight yesterday by drivers saying two horses were running wild across the Arterial Road near Alton garden nursery by the A130 near Wickford.
Before they could arrive at the scene a Billericay man in a Honda Civic collided with both horses, killing one outright.
The road was blocked for two hours as officers attempted to save the second horse, but a local vet decided the surviving horse was suffering so much it had to be put down.
