Conservationists have turned up the heat on a campaign to get Harwich's sixth form centre listed.

The Harwich Society is not happy with the Harwich School's plans to sell the Grange, which would release funds for new education facilities.

It wants the building to be officially listed to preserve it against demolition, should buyers decide to knock it down.

Andy Rutter, society secretary, said trees on the land in Hall Lane, Dovercourt, also needed protection.

He said: "We are very displeased with Tendring Council at the moment because we applied to have the trees listed in August, and we still have received no reply."

The Grange is surrounded by 150 trees - including walnut, lime, English oak, beech, hazel, and conifers - which would be safeguarded by a collective preservation order.

Nigel Hebden, head of Tendring Council's planning, said the trees had been surveyed but no decision had been made yet.

An application to get the building listed would be reviewed by English Heritage and the Department of Media, Culture and Sport.
