Braintree Town goalkeeper Paul Catley has called it quits on the Iron and decided to join Ridgeons League premier division side Maldon Town.

Catley, who has made over 400 appearances for Braintree, told the Evening Gazette the decision was so he could start enjoying his football again.

"It was a struggle at Braintree last season and there was no enjoyment.

"There was a great bunch of lads over there, but I want to enjoy my football."

Catley is also keen to feel that winning feeling again.

"When I spoke to Maldon boss Colin Wallington he said that the club is keen to make an impact in the league and also to do well in any cup.

"I want to win things again."

Despite being a Braintree resident all his life, Catley has not solely been a Braintree player.

He said: "I've had a couple of years away at Sudbury and a couple of years at Chelmsford.

"I feel like a change, and although Braintree is on my doorstep, Maldon is only down the road."

Braintree boss Gary Bellamy said: "It wasn't a total surprise as I knew he hadn't been enjoying himself.

"He has been here a long time and sometimes it's good to have a change."
