Rochford Hundred put up a brave fight before finally going down 8.5-6.5 at Harwich and Dovercourt in the 3rd round of the Leslie Wood team championship on Sunday.

The morning foursomes ended locked at 2.5-2.5 with Colin Tucker and Roy Nesbitt and Dick Clarke and George Kemp notching narrow 1 up wins for Rochford.

Dennis Bailey and Derek Deal let a 1 up lead slip at the last and had to settle for a half.

The afternoon singles were nip and tuck with several matches going down to the wire but unhappily for Rochford that was when home advantage really counted and Harwich took most of the close games.

Rob Moss grabbed a good 3 and 1 victory, while Leslie Wood debut boys Kemp and Deal cemented a good day by notching up convincing wins.

But apart from Bailey's 2 and 1 success it was a case of so near yet so far for Rochford, although team captain Richard Southwood had no complaints.

"I was proud of my team but at the end of the day we just weren't quite good enough to overcome a very good Harwich side plus the disadvantage of playing away from home."
