The countdown is on for Chelmsford's Race for Life event, which is taking place in Hylands Park on June 29.

A huge surge of early interest in the event, in aid of Cancer Research UK, meant that the race was full several weeks in advance, having hit its entry target of 4,000.

The event, one of a series of races around the country, is now in its seventh year in Chelmsford, which has always proved to be one of the most popular venues.

Last year the Chelmsford race raised more than £358,000.

Now there are plans to hold Race for Life events in Braintree and in North Weald next year to cope with the high demand from entrants in the Essex area.

For those disappointed that they will not be able to take part in the Chelmsford race the nearest venues for this year are Basildon on Sunday June 15, Southend-on-Sea on Sunday 6th July 6 and Colchester on Sunday, July 13.

A spokeswoman for Cancer Research UK said "Whilst we are delighted that the Chelmsford Race has proved so popular, we do regret that there are some people who will be disappointed."

Alternative venues can be found by logging onto www.raceforlife.org or ringing 08705 134 314.
