Customers and staff at a bakery cowered in terror as a man shouted abuse and hurled furniture.
Police were called to the Upper Crust Bakery in North Street, Rochford, after tables and chairs were smashed. An elderly woman needed smelling salts.
Manager Jacqueline Moss said: "He was totally off his head."
She added: "He didn't speak to a single member of staff or buy anything. He just went mad."
