Travellers who set up home in a Canvey field have upped and left leaving behind them a clean-up bill of more than £1,000.

The first caravans in the group of travellers arrived on the Smallgains recreation ground last Tuesday.

By the weekend there was around 12 different caravans on the council-owned land next to the Kings Holiday Park.

Castle Point Council were made aware of their arrival by worried residents and an officer went down to see how long they intended to stay. The travellers said they would be gone by Monday and kept their word.

However, there short stay has proved fairly costly. Mr Moran said: "We are left with a clean up bill of £1,100.
