Aerial battering-ram Drewe Broughton was expected to sign a two-year contract with Southend United today.
The Kidderminster Harriers hitman hoped to finalise the free transfer move this morning following a Roots Hall medical.
And the 6ft 3in giant, who has made 143 league career appearances, scoring 28 goals, said he was relishing the challenge ahead.
"I've got one or two things to sort out with Kidderminster and then a medical, but I'm hoping to become a Southend player today," said 24-year-old Broughton.
"Moving to Roots Hall is a step back up for me to a bigger club and I'm really excited about it.
"There were a couple of other clubs interested in me, but as soon as I sat down and spoke to Blues' manager Steve Wignall I knew I wanted to come here.
"He came across as a man who wants to win badly and turn this club around and he made me want to be a part of it."
Broughton made his league debut for First Division Norwich City as an 18-year-old, playing alongside current Newcastle United and Wales star Craig Bellamy.
