Streets struggling to cope with ever-increasing traffic could be made one way with a 20mph speed limit.

Residents in Harsnett Road, Colchester, say their car wing mirrors are regularly hit by vehicles and are now calling for action to make the road safer.

New Town's ward councillors are now surveying residents to get their views on a one-way system along both Harsnett Road and the neighbouring Morant Road.

Theresa Higgins (Lib Dem) said: "We got a lot of complaints during election time and people have said a one-way system would be good. We are surveying both roads and adjoining streets to see what the reaction is.

"There is no point putting the scheme to the council if the residents don't want it done."

Residents in Harsnett Road have mixed views on the scheme.

Iris Clapp said: "I think it is a very good idea but they are going to have to put speed bumps on the road.

"Motorcyclists already tend to speed and if it is made one way they will go even faster."

But Pip Taylor is against the idea, stating that if people drive past spaces looking to park outside their homes they will then have to drive all the way round again.

If enough residents support the move, the proposals will be taken to Colchester Council's street services.
