Braintree Council is to celebrate bike week between June 14 and June 22 by officially opening two cycleways.

In a bid to encourage residents to get out of their cars and on to bikes, the council will be officially opening a cycleway between Millennium Way and Stubbs Lane in Braintree and another route between Spinks Lane and Allectus Way in Witham.

Both cycleways were upgraded last year, with a new surface put on the Braintree route, and a major refurbishment and extra lighting installed on the Witham route.

A spokeswoman for the council said: "We are trying to encourage people out of their cars and on to bikes instead because it is better for the environment and better for them.

"We are also keen to point out that the district now has a good system of cycleways."
