An MP has been in talks with the Egyptian Ambassador to ensure the humane treatment of a man held prisoner in Egypt.
Southend West Tory David Amess met Ambassador Adel El-Gazzar earlier this week to discuss the trial of Maajid Nawaz.
Nawaz, 24, is due to stand trial on June 21 alongside two other men accused of promoting illegal Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir.
He claims while in the Egyptian jail they were tortured with electric shocks, deprived of sleep and forced to sign false confessions.
Mr Amess led a delegation of four MPs to find out what was happening, including details of charges, issues of torture, imprisonment conditions and bail.
Abi Nawaz, mother of Maajid, of London Road, Westcliff, said she is heartened by the efforts of the MP.
